This seminar will provide a detailed step-by-step discussion for bookkeepers, treasurers, business administrators, and/or ministers to help you complete the IRS tax forms required to comply with the latest tax rules unique to churches and ministries including:

CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS

  •   Requirements for receipting cash, noncash, and vehicle contributions

  • When are designated contributions deductible (including missionaries, special appeals to pay medical bills, and more)?

  • Substantiating out-of-pocket expenses for unreimbursed charitable travel

  • When are "suggested donations" not deductible as a charitable contribution?

     

 W-2 / Form 941 Filing

  •  Unique rules for completing a minister’s W-2

  •  For all employees--detailed discussion of what is taxable and nontaxable including health savings accounts, medical expense reimbursements, cell phones, allowances, and other compensation

 

Filing form 1099-misc

  • When does a church file a Form 1099?

  • Examples of services to be reported and exceptions from reporting

  • How to report rents and nonemployee compensation paid

Rick Battershell has specialized in the accounting and taxation of churches and ministers for over 20 years and has a Master’s Degree in Taxation. Serving churches and other Christian ministries accounts for over 75% of Rick’s CPA practice. He is currently a member of and regular speaker for the Northwest chapter of the National Association of Church Business Administration. He has also been involved in the Washington State Society of CPAs Not-for-Profit Committee for several years.

John Reid is a CPA with more than twenty years of experience serving non-profit organizations. He has a bachelor’s degree from the Masters College (formerly Los Angeles Baptist College, class of 1982) and is licensed to practice accounting in California and Washington State.  John founded a CPA firm in Southern California in the early 1990s specializing in services to the non-profit community.  John is currently employed as Business Administrator of Crossroads Bible Church. Additionally he works with the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability as a field review representative.
